Sharone Freed

During the winter of 2007, due to strong winds I found myself in need of a new fence. So, I started to have a good look around at the options available to me as a customer. I didn’t want timber because of the regular maintenance required; painting, repairing broken posts or panels etc. I looked at building a brick wall instead, but this turned out to be an expensive solution and not aesthetically pleasing. Plastic it seemed was likely to fade and become brittle over time.

Eventually my search took me to Colourfence, which was a completely new garden fence concept to me. Steel fencing? Steel in our garden? Initially, it didn’t sound particularly attractive but once I’d seen the product, I was bowled over by it. With a young family, the low maintenance and security aspects particularly appealed to me. Also the fact that the fencing is environmentally friendly and it comes with a 25 year warranty was important to me and it looked great! Colourfence is a strong, lightweight, practical alternative to timber fencing. The perfect replacement for your old tired wood fence.

I became aware that there was an opportunity to become involved with the business as a franchisee. My area of Cambridgeshire was available and I was personally at a crossroads career-wise. So I decided to take the plunge and set up my own franchise. My initial challenge was to spread the word about Colourfence, because even though it makes up over 40% of the domestic fencing industry in Australia (where it was conceived), it was a relatively unknown product in the UK.

In 2008, I was awarded runner-up Colourfence Franchisee of the Year and by 2009, I had obtained the big prize – Franchisee of the Year. Since then Colourfence Cambridge is the no 1 UK franchise (Feb 2016)
