“Where can ColourFence be installed?” is a common question we get. We’ve installed our metal fencing in all kinds of gardens and properties, so we’re very experienced in different kinds of terrains. Whether it be your traditional garden lawn or soil border, a tarmac driveway or a patio, chances are we’ve installed our steel fences there. Of course, everyone’s garden is different, which is why we offer a free, no-obligation site survey and quote to every customer. We’ll be able to take a look at the terrain and advise the best solution for you. But what if your garden has a particular challenge? Read on for the different garden situations and how we deal with them.
Where can ColourFence be Installed?
On a Garden Lawn or Border
We have completed tens of thousands of ColourFence installations in customer gardens and parks. We can work around trees and plants in most cases, too.
Fencing for a Sloping or Uneven Garden
Here in the UK, we have many mountains and hills and so installing fencing in an uneven or sloping garden is no sweat for us. We’ve done it thousands of times. You have a few different options here:
Steps and Rakes
It’s rare for a garden to be perfectly flat and symmetrical and we believe that it’s the little quirks that add character to an outside space.
On sloping ground, we can “step”. This means keeping the panels square but looking like a staircase. So going from the top, each panel is a little lower than the previous one. This gives you straight sides on the top. This is prioritising the higher fence line, as opposed to the ground line. The above installation pictured is a good example.
We can also “Rake”; this means angling the top and/ or bottom to follow the ground line. With this technique, the fence line follows the slope of the ground. Giving you an even sloping top.
On Concrete or Gravel
Sometimes, the area the fence is to be installed is on hard ground, such as a concrete area, a driveway or perhaps a gravel verge or path. We have a variety of options available here, from drilling into the hard surface, or occasionally, and particularly with older surfaces, we can simply pull up and remove what’s there. This gives us free ground in which to dig down to install your fence posts.
On Top of a low Existing Wall
When thinking about where ColourFence can be installed, this is where we need to exercise a little caution. The integrity of the existing wall needs to be carefully examined for weaknesses to see if it is suitable to support your fence. Any professional fence installer will be sure to inspect your wall first, so do beware of cowboy installers that don’t examine the wall and discuss its suitability with you. If your wall is of sufficient build and strength, we can usually install ColourFence on top up to a certain height. Your installer will be able to advise you.
On Top of a high Wall or to Safeguard a Body of Water
At ColourFence we prioritise safety and so sadly, we are not able to install ColourFence where there is a significant drop down of a metre or more, on one or both sides. It can also not be used as a safety guard close to swimming pools, ponds or lakes. ColourFence is primarily a decorative product and like other fencing, including wood or composite, does not have the required weight-bearing properties appropriate for these types of installations.
On Block Paving or Patio
ColourFence can be installed where there is block paving or slabs. Your local installer will discuss with you where the posts are best installed into the ground and careful lines will be cut in order to preserve as much of the blocks as possible. There may be some postcrete around the bottom of each post which will be kept as tidy as possible. If you would prefer to hide these, potential solutions are potted plants or planters, gravel, structures such as sheds, benches or simply additional paving blocks added on top.
